INTERNATIONAL BOXING DAY

INTERNATIONAL BOXING DAY is an annual phenomenon commemorated on August 27. The date coincides with the first edition of the International Boxing Federation (IBA) World Championships, which were held in Havana, Cuba in 1974. The competition was held between August 17 and August 30 with 11 champions crowned and the host country topping the medal table.

International Boxing Day first took place in 2017. After that, fans, athletes and stakeholders alike were encouraged to come together to celebrate boxing every year on July 22. The new August 27 date was confirmed in July 2021.

The South African National Boxing Orgainsation will be partake in the Internation boxing celebration by conducting a public training and exhibition session. The session will be mainly joined by the National team members and boxers.

The intention of this initiative is to celebrate the international Boxing Day and hoping that it will also inspire the young generation to start doing boxing, take it up as a sport of choice and a possible career.

The venue will be in Pretoria (Mamelodi Mall). The function will commence from 11h00 – 13h00.

The programme will be three hours long and will entail: • Opening and Purpose of the day; • Public introduction of National Team boxers; • Team Coaches & Boxers displaying boxing drills; • Inviting the public to try out some boxing movement (pad work); • Closure; and • Photo moments with the team with the public.
